Overview

The Riga XL greenhouse is built to endure challenging climates with confidence. Its reinforced aluminum frame and curved side walls provide superior resistance to snow, wind, and hail. The thick 16 mm polycarbonate glazing delivers outstanding insulation and light diffusion, maintaining an interior environment that supports healthy plant growth. The polycarbonate fits tightly inside the engineered framing. Every detail reflects Hoklartherm’s commitment to quality and precision.

As the largest model in the Riga series, the XL offers taller and wider interior space for plants and projects alike. It creates a warm, protective environment that helps gardeners extend the growing season and achieve consistent results, even in harsh conditions. The Hoklartherm Riga XL combines capacity, craftsmanship, and performance in a structure designed to last for generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Riga greenhouse made?

The Riga series of greenhouses is made by Hoklartherm in Apen, Germany. Hoklartherm has been manufacturing high quality greenhouses in Germany for over 40 years!

Can someone help me decide which greenhouse is best for me?

Our retailers are great resources to reach out to discuss greenhouses – and our Exaco customer service team is always ready to help your dream greenhouse come to life – we are just a call away. Over the years we have personally supported many customers choose their greenhouse and options – and that expericence goes a long way. You can also find additional resources and inspiration on our blog too.

Do I need a permit?

You might need a permit. Not everyone does and even sometimes those who do need a permit do not apply for one. Each municipality sets their guidelines for what types/size of buildings need a permit in their area – sometimes this is based on square footage or whether they consider it a “permanant structure” – but this is all decided by your local permit office. If you are applying for a permit, you should always go through this process BEFORE you order your greenhouse – depending on local wind/snow load requirements you may need additional reinforcements or supports to reach your local requirements. You may also find other restrictions for placement that may mean you have to limit the size or location. If you are going to get a permit, it is always best to know the restrictions ahead of time.

Do you provide structural certifications for the Riga/Riga XL greenhouses?

We have general structural certifications to give you a realistic idea of the loads of each greenhouse. However, if you are applying for a permit you may need a letter stamped by an engineer certified by your state, or you may need a site specific certification. We do not provide these state or site specific documents, but they are available for a fee. Conversely, we may be able to point you toward an engineer who can assist you with the documentation you need. Keep in mind, each location/state has different load requirements. If you are in a location that has higher load regulations, you may need to purchase additional reinforcements.

What is required to prepare the site for my polycarbonate greenhouse? Do I need concrete to anchor it?

The greenhouse site must be level, this will help ensure an easy and straightforward assembly. Your greenhouse must be anchored securely to the ground. This is best done in one of two ways. You may pour a concrete strip foundation (to the frostline is recommended by the manufacturer) or you may purchase a foudation/base frame kit for the greenhouse. The unique foundation frame eliminates the need for concrete. It hooks to the bottom of the greenhouse and is buried in a trench that is about 5″ deep all the way around the greenhouse. This will securely anchor the Riga greenhouse. Occassionally, we have also had people pour full concrete slabs and use anchor screws with the supplied L brackets – if you do this, please account for drainage. You can also find a wealth of information to prepare for your greenhouse in the first section of our assembly manual, which can be downloaded on the product page.

Testimonials

  • "My wife and I wanted to learn to grow vegetables as part of a healthy and active lifestyle. We purchased a Riga greenhouse, assembled it ourselves and raised it on the south side of our home. With no former experience, we started to grow a variety of greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, beets, broccoli, herbs and flowers. Now in our third year, we grow year round in the greenhouse. It is very well constructed and with a small blower heater, we can maintain growing temperatures in winter in North Carolina. It is wonderful to go out to the greenhouse every morning and clip a bucket of fresh green for an amazing breakfast! It has literally been life changing."

  • "A Nice Functional and Sturdy Greenhouse. It is now a year + later and I am still very pleased with this structure. It is very functional much more energy efficient than my previous one and has even survived a hurricane. Definately not a single man job and probably would have been much easier with three persons but two ole guys were quite successful."

  • "Great greenhouse, great service! I asked a million questions to Andrew. I really researched this product. They answered all my questions and installed the Riga XL. I couldn't be happier with both the service and product. It's very rare you get this quality experience. The help I got in setting up the foundation to the greenhouse setup was amazing. Our greenhouse is even better than we imagined. We even purchased additional heaters and composting bins!"

  • "Tropical greenhouse. Upstate NY has long hard winters, but this Christmas (2016) it hit 96 degrees in my greenhouse and the tropical plants are loving it. The shape seems to shed the snow really well and it has enough height for most plants. I used 1/2 inch pipe insulation over the aluminum arches to minimize the condensation, I keep the humidity high for the plants. A gas furnace keeps it warm (65 degrees F) and a 1 KW grow light helps with the dark snowy days. If we're not out there I leave a portable heater's pilot light on to keep the carbon dioxide levels from dropping too low, there is only about 1 air exchange per hour (it seals well) and the plants need a little more carbon dioxide of optimal growth. The optional aluminum foundation worked well, and the floor is decorative stones in a plastic grid material that makes the stones very stable to walk on.

The kits directions were good but don't under estimate the other work like leveling the site and bringing in gas, water, and electric. Exaco was very good about taking care of some minor parts issues with this complex kit. It is now a tropical paradise with bananas, papayas, plumeria, coffee, tea, avocado, cinnamon, orange, lime, guava, figs, Hawaiian tree fern and lots of orchids. We're very happy with it and everyone says it looks good."

  • "Outstanding product. The purchase of our Riga was one of the best buying decisions my wife and I have ever made. It is a top quality and value product. My wife wants to divorce me and marry the Riga. The service and support we received from the folks at Exaco was in a word "Outstanding". We purchased our Riga XL in 2011. To avoid potential issues be sure to follow assembly instructions carefully."
