Overview

The ThermoStar Composter provides an impressive 267 gallons of capacity for households and gardeners who generate large amounts of kitchen scraps, leaves, grass clippings, and other compostable garden waste. Its 50-inch by 50-inch footprint provides plenty of room for building and maintaining a substantial composting system.

One of the biggest advantages of the ThermoStar is its insulated construction. The walls use Thermolen, a foamed polypropylene material that creates insulating air pockets within the panels. These thermal walls help retain heat generated by sunlight and microorganisms inside the compost bin. Maintaining that warmth helps create favorable conditions for decomposition and can accelerate the composting process.

Ventilation works alongside the insulated walls to support the composting environment. Integrated ventilation openings encourage airflow into the organic material while the thermal construction helps retain valuable warmth. Together, insulation and ventilation help create the warm, aerated conditions needed for productive home composting.

The ThermoStar also stands apart with its substantial construction. Six side walls create the jumbo composting chamber, with thick rods connecting the panels for additional structural support. The 4.5 mm walls provide a much more substantial enclosure than many lightweight compost bins.

Loading the composter is easy through the large opening at the top. When compost is ready for use, lower wall sections provide convenient access to finished material. This lets you remove compost from around the bin instead of having to unload everything from the top.

With its extra-large capacity, the ThermoStar is especially useful for vegetable gardeners, raised bed gardening, and larger landscapes. Finished compost can be incorporated into garden soil, used when filling raised beds, or added around established plants as appropriate.

Made in Germany, the ThermoStar uses durable, UV- and weather-resistant Thermolen material designed for long-term outdoor use. Whether you’re expanding your home composting setup or need a large compost bin capable of handling significant volumes of organic waste, the ThermoStar provides the capacity and insulated construction to take on the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no bottom to the composter?

The open base design allows micro organisms and worms from the soil to access the bio mass to speed composting.

How do I keep tunneling rodents out of my compost?

We sell a soil fences/grates that are designed to keep rodents out and allow micro organisms and worms from the soil to access your bio mass to speed composting. Made for any open bottom composter. They are 32″ x 32″ and 38″ x 38″. Or you can put hardware cloth or a wire mesh underneath the composter to keep the rodents for tunneling into the composter.

A critter chewed a hole in the side of my composter, what should I do?

We sell replacment parts for the composters. Contact our customer service (512) 407-8500 or fill out the “Contact Us” form on the bottom of this page. If rodents are a problem you can wrap hardware cloth around the bottom and sides if you need. Putting the Aerobin on a solid base also prevents the rodents for getting to the bottom edge where they can start chewing.

The material in my composter is not breaking down.

When adding material to your composter, premix your brown and green material together before adding it to your composter. This way you have a diverse and balanced mix of organic material. Nitrogen rich items such as green grass clippings, coffee grounds and chicken manure can be a catayst for composting.

Can I compost human waste or dog waste?

No, the average backyard composter does not get hot enough to kill pathogens that can cause disease. Feces from grass-eating animals, such as cows, chickens, or rabbits, is ok, but it has to “cure” for several months, or they will burn your plants.

There are a lot of fruit flies/gnats in my compost is there anything I can do?

Insects in and around your compost are considered normal. The help breakdown compost. Fruit flies/gnats have a 1–3-month breeding season and are attracted to compost for a food source and breeding environment. They will disappear after that. It’s a normal part of aerobic composting. You can make the compost inaccessible to fruit flies/gnats by covering the top layer of compost with about 1″ of grass clippings or by using some old towels. Leave the cover off for 10 minutes or so to allow them to leave because they can’t access the food source.

Do I need to turn the compost?

Turning your compost is not strictly necessary; however, it will speed up the decomposition and ensure an even breakdown of material. If you have a tumbling composter like the Mr. Spin or Ms. Tumbles, rotate the tumbler a couple of times a week.

What are the GRAF composters made of?

Material is 100% recycled polypropylene (post consumer polypropylene) – High quality polypropylene that is extremely rigid and impact resistant.
