What is a cold frame used for?

Commonly used for lettuce beds, cool weather vegetables, flowers, and other smaller vegetables and plants. They keep the plants warm and also protect them from wind and heavy rain. The lid can be closed when the temperatures drop or the lid can be propped open when it warms up. The polycarbonate panels allow UV light in so the plants can grow. They can also be used to over winter plants or harden off young plants before the go in the ground.

Where’s the best place to set up a cold frame?

Since cold frames are used in the colder months of the year, you will want to set up your cold frame in a sunny spot, ideally south facing.

I removed the protective film on my cold frame. How can I tell which side is UV protected and should face the outside?

f the film on the polycarbonate panels are removed and you are unsure of which side has the UV coating, follow the steps below:

Take a UV Flashlight and aim the flashlight down the flutes of the polycarbonate. The side with UV coating will illuminate in a green color and the side without UV coating will not be affected.

Is it suitable for colder climates?

Yes. Although the twin-wall polycarbonate is thinner than heavier models, the frame and material are designed for year-round use. For heavier snow loads, consider anchoring or a heavier model.

Can it be moved easily?

Yes. At 13 lbs and a compact footprint, it can be relocated when needed. For long-term placement, anchoring is recommended for stability.
