Frequently Asked Questions

How does the auto opener on the Biostar 1500 work?

The Automatic Opener includes a black piston that is filled with non-toxic oils (hexadecan-1-ol) that reacts to the temperature inside the cold frame. The warmer it gets inside, the oil heats up and causes the piston to expand, opening the lid.

What is a cold frame used for?

Commonly used for lettuce beds, cool weather vegetables, flowers, and other smaller vegetables and plants. They keep the plants warm and also protect them from wind and heavy rain. The lid can be closed when temperatures drop, or propped open when it warms up. The polycarbonate panels allow UV light in so the plants can grow. They can also be used to overwinter plants or harden off young plants before they go in the ground.

Where’s the best place to set up a cold frame?

Since cold frames are used in the colder months of the year, you will want to set up your cold frame in a sunny spot, ideally south facing.

What is inside the Juwel Biostar 1500 piston?

The piston is filled with non-toxic oils (Hexadecan‑1‑ol) which itself is not dangerous for nature. It is not toxic for organisms and readily biodegradable.

I removed the protective film on my cold frame. How can I tell which side is UV protected and should face the outside?

f the film on the polycarbonate panels are removed and you are unsure of which side has the UV coating, follow the steps below:

Take a UV Flashlight and aim the flashlight down the flutes of the polycarbonate. The side with UV coating will illuminate in a green color and the side without UV coating will not be affected.

Is assembly required?

Yes. The BioStar 1500 requires assembly; a complete set of instructions is included, and most users complete it in one afternoon.

Does it include automatic ventilation?

Yes. It comes with one automatic “quick-release” lid opener to help manage internal temperature without manual lifting.

What kind of plants can I grow inside?

You can grow a wide range of plants: seedlings, herbs, cold-tolerant vegetables, perennials, and more.

How does the “no-drip” design work?

The specially engineered panels direct condensation along internal channels rather than allowing it to drip onto plants, helping keep foliage dry and healthy.

Is it suitable for full-year use?

Yes. The heavy-duty materials, UV-stabilized walls, and strong frame make it suitable for extended use year-round.
