Frequently Asked Questions

Does the rain barrel come with a spigot?

Yes, the rain barrel includes a brass-colored plastic Fast Flow Tap.

Can it connect to a downspout?

Yes, but you will need a diverter.  The Graf rain barrels are closed systems, meaning that there is no screened inlet like some other rain barrels.  It is best to use a diverter that is directly plumbed to the rain barrel.  Exaco does have two diverters (one circular, one rectangular) that insert into a hole cut into your downspout and then travels down a tube that inserts into a hole cut into the rain barrel.  When the rain barrel is full, any superfluous water continues down your downspout.  The barrel has no overflow piping to worry about.  The diverters are sold separately from the rain collection tanks.

Can I upgrade from the included plastic tap to a brass tap?

We do stock a few brass taps and we can upgrade you to a brass tap for an additional charge.  However, please consider that the brass tap dispenses water at a slower pace due to the shut off mechanism.  The plastic tap is a fast flow tap with a simple quarter turn and many people find this preferable when filling watering cans, etc.  The plastic fast flow taps are surprisingly durable.

Can I connect a garden hose to the rain barrel?

No, a US garden hose is not easily connected metric threading (on the brass tap) and no threading on the plastic tap.  In Europe these smaller rainbarrels are used primarily to fill watering cans rather than connecting a hose.  The water in a rain barrel flows only by gravity – it will not be a pressured flow like water from the tap on your house.  If you want a hose, we recommend looking for rubber tubing at a home supply store and using a hose clamp to fix it in place.  A tube can be attached to the nozzle of the plastic tap and the brass tap has a separate nipple that can be attached if you would like to attach a tube.  Depending on the diameter of your existing hose, you may be able to cut off the threads and attach your hose by using a hose clamp.

Is there an overflow outlet on the rain barrel?

No there is no overflow outlet.  When using one of the Graf diverters, any overflow water would just continue down your downspout.

How do I keep debris from the roof from entering my tank?

Gutter guards on your gutters will help screen large debris.  The diverters from Graf do have a hole in the middle to allow some debris to pass down your downspout.

Will mosquitos get into my rain tank?

Graf rain barrels are designed to be closed systems to prevent mosquito breeding.

Will algae in my rain tank be an issue?

No, Graf rain barrels have thick dark walls and no screens like many rain barrels.  This limits light in the barrel and helps prevent algae growth.

Can it be used outdoors year round?

Yes, when placed on a level surface and winterized as needed.

Is the finish fade-resistant?

Yes, the material is UV-stable to withstand outdoor exposure.
