How long does it take to make compost? Is there a minimum amount of waste required for it to work?

Exaco Customer Support | 2/4/2016

Hello Madeleine, Thank you for visiting our website.

Your question is very difficult to answer – regardless of what any other supplier might claim about any composter. Turning organic waste to compost very much depends on many factors – some of which are:

  • Moisture level – has to be damp (not too wet not too dry)
  • Temperature inside – cooking temperature – in low 100’s is good. This is difficult to do.
  • What is the mixture of organic materials – should be 60-70% brown (mostly dry material out of your yard and shredded paper) vs 30-40% green (kitchen waste)

It is quite a science to make good compost – something best left to Master Gardeners – and the retired. This is why in most other developed countries especially Europe any one with a garden has an average of 3 compost bins – they simply fill a composter – they may turn the material one or two times annually but they just let it sit and know it takes time – at least 1 year (may be two).

Only those who manage a perfect mixture might be able to create compost in 2-3 months.

However, all of this said the Australians developed a totally hands-off compost bin the Aerobin 400 – this unit needs no attention. But there is one issue, it is so effective because of its unique design that You see a lot of reviews claiming it is not making any compost but only a wet damp mass – the reason is users are not adding enough brown waste – this is essential to make good compost. However, the damp-mass is actually very good “compost” it is just a step between raw organic waste and the other end which is leachate or compost tea. Take a look at this link – it shows you how to make the best compost.
